SOUTHWEST ASIA -- During a stop to the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing at a non-disclosed base here Feb. 16, an Air Force Reserve C-130 Hercules worked with air transportation Airmen from the 380th Expeditionary Logistics Readiness Squadron and maintenance Airmen from the 380th Expeditionary Aircraft Maintenance Squadron to complete an "engines running" cargo off-load.
The cargo off-load is a frequent occurrence in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility. It allows airlift crews and airlifters to make quick stops at several locations to deliver and pick up cargo.
According to Air Mobility Command officials, the C-130 is a mobility intra-theater workhorse. The aircraft enables AMC's rapid, tactical mobility airlift into austere airfields and flies both airdrop and aeromedical evacuation missions. The C-130's flexibility makes it integral to humanitarian and aeromedical evacuation operations and its small airfield capability allows it to get into places closer to where aid is needed.
Overall capacities the aircraft can be configured for are: C-130E/H/J (short) can carry six pallets or 16 container delivery system bundles, or 74 litters, 92 combat troops or 64 paratroopers (or any combination). A C-130J (stretch) can carry 8 pallets or 24 CDS bundles, or 97 litters, 128 combat troops or 92 paratroopers (or any combination).
The C-130 performing the off-load at the 380th AEW is from the 911th Airlift Wing at Pittsburgh.
