HOUSTON – The 147th Attack Wing had the privileged honor of welcoming Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force JoAnne Bass on her first official visit to Joint Reserve Base Ellington, Saturday, Dec. 2, 2023, marking a distinct moment in the base’s history.

Bass is the highest-ranking enlisted member in the United States Air Force and is the first person in her position to visit Ellington in decades. She was accompanied by Chief Master Sgt. John Alsvig, Air Force First Sergeant Special Duty Manager.

The visit was primarily focused on understanding the experience of enlisted personnel here at Ellington. She said that she was especially excited to learn about the guardsmen and their unique experience, as the Air National Guard holds a special place in her heart.

The visit began with Bass engaging in a series of tours of base commands, including Operations Group, Mission Support Group, and the Air Support Operations Squadron. She later engaged in a series of meetings with base leadership and key personnel. These discussions covered a range of topics, from the current state of readiness and ongoing operations at the base to the challenges and opportunities faced by the enlisted men and women serving there.

Bass, known for her hands-on leadership style and genuine concern for the well-being of Airmen, listened attentively to the concerns raised by the base personnel and offered valuable insights.

One of the focal points of the visit was her interaction with the enlisted members at Joint Reserve Base Ellington. Recognizing the vital role that these men and women play in the Air Force's mission, she took the time to meet with them in a small, private luncheon. This informal session provided an opportunity for Airmen to share their experiences, discuss their career aspirations, and seek advice from someone who has risen through the ranks to the highest enlisted position.

During her visit, Bass had the opportunity to observe various training exercises, operational activities, and visit with families visiting the base during the drill weekend. This hands-on experience allowed her to gain a deeper understanding of the unique contributions made by the Texas Air National Guard at Joint Reserve Base Ellington to the overall readiness and capabilities of the Air Force.

Her presence served to boost morale and reinforce the importance of the work being carried out by the dedicated men and women stationed here. Bass's visit to Joint Reserve Base Ellington exemplified the Air Force's commitment to its people and underscored the invaluable role that enlisted members play in ensuring the nation's defense.
