GARMISCH, GERMANY – Nearly 30 recently redeployed U.S. Army Reserve Soldiers and their family members attended a Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Event hosted by the 446th Movement Control Battalion (MCB), at the Edelweiss Lodge and Resort, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, Nov. 3-5, 2023.
“I want to stress how proud I am of this unit and all you have accomplished in the past year,” said Brig. Gen. Karen S. Monday-Gresham, Commanding General, 7th Mission Support Command. “The strength of our Army is our Soldiers and the strength of our Soldiers is truly our families, so thank you,” said Monday-Gresham. “To the Soldiers of the 446th MCB, thank you for taking part in this mobilization. You may not realize it but you made history.”
The 446th Movement Control Battalion mission oversees the commitment of European theater-wide transportation and facilitates freedom of movement for supply routes. The unit recently returned from a nine-month mobilization to Poland in support of Operation Secure, Deter and Reinforce, marking the first time in more than a decade that a forward-stationed U.S. Army Reserve unit in Europe has completed a mobilization in theater.
“The 446th coordinated and enabled ground movements for all units within area of operations victory, and surrounding nations, encompassing 13 countries from Scandinavia to Greece," said Monday-Gresham. “The 446th also supported the transfer of 39 million pounds of material aid to Ukraine valued at a staggering 600 million dollars.”
“The process really started almost two years ago and rather than go back to a support center like Fort Cavasos or Ft. Bliss and do the pre-mobilization training there, we did it entirely in Germany,” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Neal McGough, commander of the 446th MCB.
The 7th MSC coordinated the Yellow Ribbon event to allow Soldiers and their families to relax, recharge and reintegrate.
“Events like this are important for Soldiers and their families because it helps to welcome them back home and reintegrate them because they have been on a mobilization and the families have also been by themselves,” said Ms. Taylor Harrison, Army Reserve administrator, 510th Regional Support Group, 7th MSC.
The purpose of the Yellow Ribbon event is to provide Soldiers and their families with information, services, referrals, and outreach opportunities.
To host the event in such an idyllic and historic location as Edelweiss was special for the unit and participating families — “This is exactly what we needed to get the resources needed and to reconnect and spend some good quality time together,” said McGough.
For some, it was their first time to visit the area - like Mr. Gerald Ruffin, who attended as a guest of his spouse, U.S. Army Capt. Stacey Ruffin, operations officer for 446th MCB. “I had a pretty good time,” said Ruffin. “It was a new life experience and I enjoyed seeing the mountains, being with the kids and family time.”
The 446th MCB is a troop program unit under the 510th RSG, 7th MSC. The 7th Mission Support Command is the U.S. Army Reserve presence in Europe. Comprised of 26 units across Germany and Italy, the 7th MSC provides logistics and sustainment resources in support of U.S. Army Europe and Africa missions across the theater.
