FORT HOOD, Texas — 15th Sustainment Brigade "Wagonmasters," 13th Sustainment command (Expeditionary) received an "Award of Recognition" given by the Robertson Blood Center during a small ceremony at the brigade headquarters, here Feb. 3.

Perry Jefferies, a blood donor recruiter for the center presented the award to Sgt. Maj. Kendra Wallace, the 15th Sust. Bde.'s rear detachment senior noncommissioned officer, who accepted the award on behalf of the "Wagonmasters."

The "Wagonmasters" received the award for the highest number of volume blood donors from a brigade sized element within the 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) in 2009.

January is National Blood Donor Month.

"During that month, the center holds the annual Blood Donor Recognition Ceremony honoring dozens of top donors, organizations, and supporters on Fort Hood," Jefferies said.

The 13th ESC was honored as the top largest [donating] unit on Fort Hood according to an article written by Jefferies for the Armed Services Blood Program web site.

Wallace said that she felt honored to be accepting the award on behalf of Command Sgt. Maj. Nathaniel Bartee, the senior non-commissioned officer, 15th Sust. Bde., 13th ESC, whom was one of the spearheads for the blood drive.

"To know the brigade played a part in saving Soldiers lives is a tribute to the many awesome things the Soldiers in this brigade do," Wallace said.

According to Jefferies, the hundreds of Soldiers and supporters identified with the 15th Sustainment Brigade donated 365 units of blood during one of the many brigade-wide blood drives coordinated by Col. Larry Phelps, the brigade's commander, and Bartee last spring, before the brigade deployed in September.

"Each unit [of blood] can provide products that may possibly help three people," Jefferies said. "That is over 1,000 lives improved thanks to this effort."

"We really appreciate the "Wagonmasters," honor their service, and hold them all in our thoughts during the deployment." Jefferies wrote in a recent email.
