NIAGARA FALLS AIR RESERVE STATION, N.Y.—The 50th Annual Niagara Reserve/Guard Golf Tournament kicked off at 12:00p.m. July 10th, 2023 at River Oaks Golf Club, Grand Island, New York. For 50 years, active members from the installation joined by prior service retirees have played the tournament to strengthen morale.

The tournament was designed to give Airmen and retirees from the base a day to have fun with coworkers and friends. It provides solid ground for good memories and coworker relationships to thrive, as well as some means for proper competition between members of the 914th Air Refueling Wing and the 107th Attack Wing.

“This is my first time ever playing in a golf tournament,” Tech. Sgt. Matius Yasahardja, a 914th Readiness NCO said. “After starting to play golf, I learned that meeting others, building morale and finding comradery is what it’s all about.”

In the past, the tournament took place at Oak Run Golf Course, Niagara Frontier Golf Club in Youngstown, New York, and now River Oaks Golf Club. River Oaks is home of the toughest rated hole in Western New York, according to the club’s website.

The tournament: River Oaks Golf Club is an 18-hole course with a challenging layout for most players.

The teams: Each team has four players. One member of each team is required to be an active member or retiree from the 914th ARW or the 107th ATKW, both located at Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station. This year 26 teams came out for the tournament.

The winners: Mike Williams, Maj. Cory Bota, Mike Scibilia (Elder) and his son Michael “Mike” Scibilia, won with a score of -10, making this their second win in a row.

“I love this tournament, and I really enjoy seeing the great relationships people have with each other out there,” Michael “Mike” Scibilia said. “If you look around, there are so many smiles and such great communication. It’s great seeing the current members reuniting with some of the retirees that mentored them and helped them on their way into the Air Force.”

Scibilia has been playing in the tournament for 14 years, and for the past 10 has been organizing and putting it together.

“I think most of the people out here look forward to this tournament every year. It allows for them to see old friends and often times, make new friends.” Scibilia said. “Not only is it a little competition between the 914th and the 107th, there are just a lot of great people out here having a good time.”
