ARMY SUPPORT ACTIVITY-DIX, N.J., -- More than 150 Soldiers vying for higher leadership responsibilities and solid footing into the non-commissioned officer corps recently graduated from U.S Army Reserve Command's Non-commissioned Officer Academy at Army Support Activity — Dix.

The academy cadre and family members congratulated the Reserve and National Guard Soldiers from across the U.S., Jan. 22, upon the graduation the Warrior Leader Course at the Timmermann Center.

The WLC is a two-week course that teaches Army leadership knowledge and how to apply it through classroom and tactical field exercises. Students participate in training exercises including land navigation, physical training and how to perform Soldier counseling and NCO evaluation ratings.

Lt. Col. Sherry McCloud, commander of the 436th Transportation Company, of Staten Island, N.Y., was the guest speaker.

"As current or future NCOs, it is that bond or unique band of brotherhood, coupled with the skills that have been instilled and or refined here at the WLC that will aid in mission success." McCloud said.

"When the chatter, debate, and indecisiveness of policy makers has ceased, when negotiations fail and the final order is given, it becomes you, the non-commissioned offer, executors, and leaders of Soldiers to execute national policy and face the enemy on the objective," she said.

Individual honors were bestowed upon Spc. Shanna Prol, from Livonia, N.Y., the distinguished honor graduate, and Spc. Mark Cheyne, from Athens, Ga., the distinguished leadership award winner.

As part of the Soldiers' course requirements, the students each wrote an essay on leadership and what it meant to them.

The NCOA commandant, Command Sgt. Maj. Peter Brooks, judged each essay before the graduation and picked Spc. Crystal Casebeer, from Derby, N.Y., as the winning writer. Casebeer read her essay "To Be My Army Leader" to her fellow graduates.

"A leader is a person who displays qualities that inspires others to strive for personal excellence," she said.
