MUSCATATUCK URBAN TRAINING CENTER, Ind. – Soldiers of the 78th Training Division and 84th Training Command gathered to observe the 78th’s assumption of command ceremony inside the Patriot Academy Gymnasium at Muscatatuck Urban Training Center on April 27.
The event, officiated by Maj. Gen. Miguel L. Castellanos, commanding general of the 84th Training Command, ushered in a new era of leadership under Brig. Gen. Christopher W. Cook, the appointed commanding general of the 78th Training Division.
“The 78th has a rich history,” said Castellanos, “The Division places soldier readiness first… The 78th plays an important role in the day to day mission, to prepare and support units.”
Castellanos then expressed his gratitude, praising the unit for organizing the event, as Cook took the podium.
“I just want to say how great of an honor it is to stand in front of you all today,” said Cook. “I’m proud to serve as your new commander.”
Cook assumed command during Guardian Response 2022, a training exercise that simulates a national emergency incident to test the preparedness of our federal response teams and soldiers. Guardian Response is managed by the 78th Training Division, and held in Indiana.
“You don’t need a commander if you don’t have soldiers,” said Cook. “I can already tell, as I come into this exercise, the quality of the soldiers that we have. I would not be here if it weren’t for the soldiers that have come before me and helped me get to this point.”
Before taking command at the 78th Training Division, Cook served in various positions and duty assignments during his career including Commander of 1st Brigade, Deputy Chief of Staff of the 75th Training Command, and Commander of 2d Battalion, 381st Regiment. Additionally, Cook has deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
