FORT KNOX, Ky. — The 233rd Transportation Company officially became a subordinate unit of the 3d Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) during a patching ceremony here Monday, Nov. 16.
The change came as a result of a Department of the Army directive for the 233rd Trans. Co., who were previously subordinate to the 101st Airborne Division, based out of Fort Campbell, Ky.
Reviewing the ceremony was Col. Jarrold M. Reeves, 3d ESC deputy commander, who welcomed the 233rd Trans. Co. as a valuable asset of the command.
"Today, Nov. 16, with the donning of the 3d ESC patch, the 233rd Trans. Co. joins over 8000 Soldiers attached to the 3d ESC for training and readiness authority," said Reeves, an Atlanta native. "The Heavy Lifters join the 7th Sustainment Brigade at Fort Eustis, Va., and 49th Quartermaster Group at Fort Lee, Va., as part of the 3d ESC team."
During his speech, Reeves assured the 233rd Trans. Co. that the 3d ESC is prepared and ready to support them in any way possible.
"The 3d ESC promises to support your training and readiness, just as we did to the 5 sustainment brigades of over 20,000 Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines that we commanded and controlled during our recent 15-month deployment to Iraq," he said.
Reeves explained that the patching ceremony was representative of the Army's and Fort Knox's base realignment and of the Army's transformation. The 233rd Trans. Co. had been supported out of Fort Campbell, Ky., by the 101st Airborne Div. Now, with a sustainment command headquarters at Fort Knox, changing the 233rd's higher headquarters was a logical transition.
"Since our higher headquarters were at Fort Campbell, and we were here, becoming a member of the 3d ESC just made more sense," said Capt. Jonathan K. Neal, the 233rd Trans. Co. commander and Macon, Ga., native. "There's the possibility for things to be better now with a FORSCOM unit on post that's able to take care of us."
Neal, who just recently took command of the 233rd Trans. Co., stated his expectations of the 3d ESC is for the 233rd to have more training assets and more visibility of FORSCOM events.
Overall, Neal said he is pleased with the transition, but is equally excited to take the reins as commander of his unit.
"The 233rd is a great unit with very experienced Soldiers," Neal said. "Many of the Soldiers here have done all 6 deployments that the unit has completed and it's just an honor to be their commander."
