BAYJI, Iraq (29 November 2005) " Spending a honeymoon in Iraq is not the way most couples would envision their special vacation. However, it is the reality for one couple here.

Capt. Julio Colon, commander of the 101st Airborne Headquarters and Headquarters Company 626th Brigade Support Battalion and his wife 1st Lt. Claire Colon, Human Intelligence platoon leader in Bravo Company, 3rd Special Troop Battalion, supporting "Rakkasans" 3rd Brigade Combat Team, were married Aug. 8.

They were deployed to Iraq Sept. 28. Julio was deployed to FOB Speicher and Claire to FOB Summerall.

The distance has not kept them from visiting each other. During the past couple months they have seen each other approximately three times. Sometimes they just do lunch, but each moment is special.

That's why when Julio found out Claire was being promoted, he asked his boss if he could fly to her ceremony. This would mean missing a full day of work

"It's not always easy," said Julio. "I come back to a lot of catch-up work because I'll miss a day or two coming to see her."

However, there was no question as to which was more important to Julio when he heard about his wife's promotion, and he was on a flight to FOB Summerall the day of her promotion.

"When he told me in an email he would be there for the promotion," said Claire,
    "I was really excited."

Julio arrived not just to watch his wife being promoted, but to pin her 1st lieutenant rank on personally.

After the ceremony, Julio beamed at his wife.

"It was one of the most exciting moments since I've been in Iraq," said Julio. "I don't get to see her everyday, but I know she is doing a momentous job."

The couple first met back in the states and was quickly married. They plan to go on R&R together in Ireland.
