Students of Lester Middle school gathered in the gymnasium Dec. 13 for a special assembly as two professional Sumo wrestlers came to impart one of Japan’s most famous and oldest National Sports, sumo.
Kotoeko, a maegashira ranked seventh in Japan’s top Makuuchi division from Sadogatake stable, and Kotoodutsu, also a professional sumo wrestler from the same stable, made a stop at the home of the Wildcats a day before the Grand Sumo Exhibition Winter Tour, held at Gushikawa Dorm in Uruma-city on Dec. 14 and 15.
This event came to fruition with the continuous effort and numerous coordination with Sumo officials and Kathleen Kalina, a teacher of Lester Middle School.
“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity!" exclaimed Kalina. It was a perfect timing.
The school winter break was pushed back a week later than usual which made it possible for the sumo wrestlers to visit the school.
The school announced the event through Japanese language classes, Japanese culture classes and seminar classes. The students learned about Sumo by watching videos and came up with questions before the wrestlers arrived.
"Sumo wrestling is a big part of Japanese culture and history," said Kalina.
"Being around sumo wrestlers and seeing them in person has a big impact. The fact that they were able to come to our school and teach the students a little bit more than surface information is very beneficial for students, especially for those who are here for only two to three years," she continued.
The assembly consisted of four parts: a true and false quiz session, Japan Sumo Association’s designated warm up exercises done by the advanced PE class students, questions and answers, and sumo wrestling matches by faculty members.
The true and false questions gave students a chance to review and refresh the knowledge they gained during classes. When sumo wrestlers were questioned about their favorite thing to do and Kotoodutsu answered “eating”, laughter broke out.
During the sumo matches faculty members donned sumo wrestler's costumes, and both students and wrestlers, who participated as referees, burst into laughter at the faculty members’ entertaining sumo performance.
"Maintain the spirit you have here today," said Col. Vincent J. Ciuccoli, camp commander of Camp Foster and Lester. "We were lucky to have this partnership and really fortunate to have two wrestlers at Lester Middle School."
"I was very excited to come to a military base and it was fun to see students in high spirits. I really hope us being here makes the students interested in Sumo and it becomes more popular," said Kotoeko. "Through this experience, I hope students become fonder of Japan.”
Kalina also hoped that students know more about Sumo and have a deeper understanding of it even though the wrestlers could not perform due to their equipment already being at the exhibition site. As for the wrestlers, she stated that to come to a military base, experience how the students have school, learn how they live, and eat American food would greatly strengthen the bond of the two cultures.
レスター中学校の生徒は12月13日、特別集会に日本で最も有名で歴史ある国技の相撲を伝えるために招かれた2人の力士が現れるのを体育館に集まり待っていた。
前頭7枚目の佐渡ヶ嶽部屋相撲力士琴恵光（ことえこう）と、同じ部屋の琴砲（ことおおづつ）は12月14日と15日に、うるま市の具志川ドームで開催された大相撲沖縄場所冬巡業前日にレスター中学校に立ち寄った。
このイベントは、レスター中学校で教鞭をとるキャサリーン・カリーナさんが、相撲関係者と度重なる調整を続けてきた努力から実現したものである。
「このようなことは二度と起こりません！」カリーナさんは叫んだ。完璧なタイミングだった。
学校の冬休みが通常よりも約1週間遅れたことで、ちょうど相撲沖縄場所冬巡業で沖縄を訪れていた力士が学校に来ることが可能となったのだ。
学校は、日本語クラス、日本文化クラス、セミナークラスを通じてイベントを発表し、生徒たちはビデオを見て相撲について学び、質問を考えた。
「相撲は日本の文化と歴史の大きな部分を占めています」とカリーナさんは言う。
「実際に力士のそばにいて、力士に会うということはすごく大きなことです。彼らが私たちの学校に来て、表面的な情報よりも少しでも多く相撲に関して教えてくれたという事実は、生徒にとって、特にここに2〜3年しか沖縄にいない生徒にとっては非常に有益だと思います」と彼女は続けた。
集会は4つのセッションに分かれ、正誤問題、上級体育クラスの生徒による日本相撲協会指定のウォームアップ演習、質疑応答、教員による相撲試合で構成されていた。
正誤問題では、生徒は授業中に得た知識を再確認することができた。質疑応答で、好きなことについて質問されると、琴砲は「 食べること」と答え、笑いが上がった。
力士の着ぐるみを着た教員の相撲の試合では、生徒だけでなく、審判として参加した力士も、教員の楽しい相撲パフォーマンスで大爆笑した。
キャンプ・フォスター/レスター司令官のヴィンセント・J・チコーリー大佐は、「今日ここで得た精神を維持するように」 と言った。「このようなパートナーシップを持てたことはラッキーだ。レスター中学校に2人の力士が来てくれたことは本当に幸運だ。」
「米軍基地に来るのはとても興味があったし、生徒たちが盛り上がっているのを見るのは楽しかった。これを機会に相撲にもっと興味を持ってくれて、もっと相撲の人気が出れば良いなと思っています」と琴恵光は言った。 「この経験を通して、子供達が日本をもっと好きになってくれることを願っています」と彼は付け加えた。
カリーナさんは、荷物が具志川会場にあるために力士が相撲を取ることはできなかったが、生徒が相撲についてもっと知り、より深く理解してくれることを望んだ。力士についても、米軍基地に来て、生徒が学校でどのように過ごしているかを体験し、生徒の生活を学び、アメリカの食べ物を食べることで、2つの文化の絆を大きく強化できたのではないかと語った。
