FORT HOOD, Texas — Soldiers of the 15th Special Troops Battalion's rear detachment flag team, 15th Sustainment Brigade, 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) joined students, family members and faculty at Clarke Elementary School to observe Patriot Day and honor our nations heroes whom died in the terrorist attacks of 9/11 during a ceremony held in the school's cafeteria, Sept. 11.

Since that day in 2001, every year on Sept. 11, Soldiers of the 15th SB have teamed up with the faculty at the elementary school to celebrate the memory of those whom died with posting of the flag at half-staff, speeches from leaders of the 15th SB, and a poem written by Floyd Gage, the school's music teacher.

Following the singing of the National Anthem and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and the pledge to the Texas flag, Frances Henshoher, the school's counselor, explained to the audience, "Today we want to remember the heroes that died for our freedom."

Capt. Deveilla Lambert, 15th STB rear detachment commander, gave a speech about the significance of Patriot Day and how after all these years, the attacks still affect our country today.

"Sept. 11, 2001 is a day to remember heroes who died of a senseless act and to honor their memory," Lambert said.

"We can take that meant to destroy and use it to reach every man, woman, girl and boy." Gage recited from his poem "A Day to Remember."

After the ceremony, the Soldiers were invited to join Wendy Castillo's first grade class for a question and answer session about war, guns, trucks and zombies then spent time with the students in physical exercise class.

We [15th STB] are honored to conduct flag drills and privileged to pay tribute to all the people that ost their lives that day, Sgt. 1st Class Earnest Grant, the non-commissioned officer in charge of the flag team, said of the invitation to participate in the day's events.

"Soldiers, civilians, and "great Americans" are the reason I call our country the best."

    "God bless America," Grant added.
