KABUL, Afghanistan — Afghan national policemen and coalition force service members discovered and eliminated six improvised explosive devices emplaced by insurgents near a village school in Khayr Kot district, Paktika province, June 24.
The Afghan national police, supported by coalition forces, discovered the IEDs in the vicinity of the school in Sehganah village and secured the site to protect the local population from the hazardous ordnance.
A coalition forces route clearance patrol and explosive ordnance disposal team arrived at the location and conducted a controlled detonation in order to eliminate the threat.
This is the fifth incident in the last week involving insurgent-emplaced IEDs in the vicinity of Afghan schools and educational facilities in eastern Afghanistan. ANP and coalition forces recently responded to and eliminated the threat from an IED found near a teachers center and public hospital in Behsood district, Nangarhar province.
In three other locations in the region, IEDs caused extensive damage to educational facilities.
There have been no non-combatant, Afghan forces, or coalition casualties from the school explosions.
