Soldiers Celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage

BAGHDAD — Service members of Victory Base Complex participated in an evening of dance performances, speeches, and personal stories derived from the many cultures of the Asian Pacific region of the world for the Asian Pacific American Heritage Observance at al-Faw Palace, May 29.

The event, sponsored by the 8th Military Police "Watchdog" Brigade, Multi-National Division—Baghdad, based out of Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, gave Soldiers a closer look at the cultures and achievements of Asian Pacific Americans.

"I am glad to be able to be a part of the Asian Pacific American Heritage Celebration. Researching about the history of the dances and costumes gives me more knowledge about the rich culture of the place where I came from, the Philippines. I hope that the Soldiers and the attendees who will be here tonight will be able to learn something too," said Spc. Christine Fredericks, a Soldier assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 8th MP Bde.

"A Soldier's Story," as told by Sgt. 1st Class Somboun Sengsy, 8th MP Bde, spoke of his childhood in Laos, and how he escaped the communist government there; eventually becoming naturalized to the United States. Now claiming Greensboro, N.C., as home, he also shared his challenges, dedication and perseverance through several experiences throughout his life; from learning the English language to passing his first Army physical training test. Since he has been an American, he expressed how he has not taken his opportunities for granted and is grateful for the chance to serve the nation that he loves.

Dr. Dave Matsuda, a Department of Defense civilian with Multi-National Corps — Iraq and Miaie Sung of Anandale, Va., with the Defense Intelligence Agency, MNC—I, also shared their stories and their contributions to culture as well as their mission in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

A video presentation gave a brief overview of the region as well as naming several Asian and Pacific Americans, who have made significant contributions throughout history.

Many Soldiers chose to take part in the full cultural experience by tasting the arrangement of various dishes native to the Asian Pacific region.

The evening of cultural festivities culminated with a performance by Toa O Samoa. Soldiers were selected from the audience to participate and competed in a dance-off.

"I loved the dancing," said Sgt. Shameka Harris, a Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, based Soldier assigned to the 8th MP Bde., MND — B. "It makes me miss Hawaii so much."
