Alyssa Anaya, an Albuquerque native, was selected to attend the Marine Corps 2019 Summer Leadership and Character Development Academy on behalf of Recruiting Station Albuquerque. Anya was selected for his outstanding academic, athletic and leadership ability. Anaya also volunteers with the local American Legion Post 49 in her free time.
The goal of SLCDA is to return better leaders and citizens to society. The selected high school sophomores and juniors from across the country are invited to attend a week long academy is held at Marine Corps Base Quantico, VA from July 15-20.
“With the leadership traits learned in the summer leadership training, I believe I would be able to bring back accurate advice and techniques to teach others around me,” Anaya said. “It will stick with me throughout my future, no matter what I may pursue, whether it be enlisting or attending college.”
Anaya is currently enrolled in NJROTC and a cheerleader at Manzano high school. She hopes that the skills she learns at SLCDA will help her improve her leadership abilities and overall military skills like physical fitness and drill.
“One thing I learned as a cadet at a local drill camp was that you search for someone with the potential of being a leader by their traits, you look for the person who people tend to be drawn to, the one who makes subtle but useful comments to others in search of helping them.”
Throughout the academy, students will learn about Marine Corps history, listen to leaders from across the country, complete physical training and participate in a community service project.
The academy aims to produce self-motivated, quality citizens who can return to their hometown with enhanced leadership skills and an increased appreciation for ethics, morals, values and community service.
Those interested in attending the SLCDA must have completed their sophomore year in high school, be between the ages of 16 to 18 by the program start date, have a minimum 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent, and meet several other physical and moral standards.
