SOUTWEST ASIA - The 380th Air Expeditionary Wing was pleased to congratulate four new Chief Master Sgt.-selects in a ceremony, March 14.

Senior Master Sgts. James Leichtenberg, Scott Robbins, James Williams and Jeffery Wilson have been selected for promotion to the rank of Chief, the highest achievable enlisted rank.

The guest speaker for the Chief Master Sgt. Recognition Ceremony was Chief Scott Dearduff, The Command Chief Master Sgt., U.S. Air Forces Central.

Chief Dearduff described the journey for the new chiefs with a golf analogy. He explained that they have now completed the front nine holes of the round in their quest to make chief. He explained that each of them now has to complete the back nine holes to make this a successful round.

"This is only the beginning of the best part of the journey," he said. "When you can give back to all Airmen, guide, lead and mentor all to be successful."

Chief Dearduff also reminded the new chiefs about remaining humble in their journey. That each should spend their time and effort concentrating on what they can do for others, not what they get for themselves.

"Chief selects," he said. "Dig in, get ready to serve. The journey, the hard part, starts from here and goes forward."

The rank of Chief Master Sgt. was created by Congress along with Senior Master Sgt. as part of the Career Compensation Act of 1958. Only one percent of the active enlisted force is authorized to hold the rank of Chief.
