    BELLE CHASSE, La. -- Soldiers and Airmen from the West Virginia Army and Air National Guard are on the ground in the New Orleans area supporting the Katrina relief effort.

    About 250 Soldiers and Airmen from units across West Virginia are serving under Task Force West Virginia and are commanded by Brig. Gen. John E. Barnett, West Virginia's assistant adjutant general.

    TFWV is partnered with elements of the Wisconsin and Louisiana National Guard at Naval Air Station New Orleans. Together, the units are coordinating the reception and organization of incoming troops and supplies into the New Orleans area as well as securing this base that is located just outside the South-east corner of the city.

    Additionally, elements of TFWV are conducting convoys into the city to provide route reconnaissance and coordinate with units on the ground to assist with their logistical needs.

    The volunteer Soldiers and Airmen are from the 1st Battalion, 150th Armor Regiment; 1092nd Engineer Battalion; 119th Engineer Battalion; 130th Airlift Wing; 145th Military Police Company; 146th Medical Air Ambulance Company; 151st Military Police Company; 152nd Military Police Company; 154th Military Police Company; 156th Military Police Company; 157th Military Police Company; 167th Air Wing; 1863rd Transportation Company; 196th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment; 197th Regional Training Institute; 2nd Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group; 1st Battalion, 201st Field Artillery; 229th Engineer Company; 245th Aviation Intermediate Maintenance Company; 753rd Ordnance Company; 77th Brigade Troop Command and Joint Force Headquarters, Charleston.

    The first contingent of about 100 troops arrived aboard several C-130, Hercules aircraft Saturday with the remainder arriving by convoy in the early-morning hours Tuesday.

    TFWV has accepted the mission and is committed to moving troops and material into the "fight" so the people of New Orleans can be evacuated safely, and the rebuilding can begin.
