The Soldiers were also deputized in a brief swearing-in ceremony by D.C. police officers, which give them special police powers if necessary.

Units involved in supporting the Maryland Guard's effort are the 1st Squadron, 158 Cavalry Regiment, the 1st Battalion, 175th Infantry Regiment, the Maryland Air Guard's 175th Security Forces Squadron, the115th Military Police Battalion, the 200th MP Company, 290th MP Co., 243 Engineering Co., and the 729th Brigade Support Battalion. Soldiers from the Special Troops Battalion, 58th BCT are standing by in Cheltenham, Md. and Towson, Md. as a Quick Reaction Force in the event of an emergency.

"We moved more than a thousand Soldiers from across the state," said Col. Charles Whittington, commander of the 58th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. "I'm proud to lead them in this historic event."

Maryland Guard members will return to their home station this evening.
