NEWPORT, R.I. – Surface Warfare Officers School (SWOS) hosted the students of the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) for an afternoon of surface warfare training May 3.

The 217 students, broken down into smaller groups, were treated to a tour of the trainers and simulators used at SWOS as part of the surface warfare curriculum.

“We are so excited to have the students of NAPS over,” said Capt. Scott Robertson, commanding officer of SWOS. “We can’t wait to show them the great training we do at SWOS. Whether or not these students choose to pursue a naval career as a surface warfare officer, it is important to expose them to the vast opportunities available to them in the community.”

At the Littoral Combat Ship Bridge Part Task Trainer, the NAPS students observed the current LCS Officer of the Deck class practice driving their ship in and out of their respective homeport. The second stop on the tour was the Full Mission Bridge (FMB) where the students practice driving ship in and out of San Diego and maneuvering around buoys. The FMB can simulate destroyer (DDG), cruiser (CG), dock landing, amphibious assault, and amphibious transport dock platforms, as well as every Navy homeport and regular ports the Navy visits around the world. The final stop took the NAPS students through the DDG and CG full-size engineering trainers which give students valuable hands-on training on the consoles and systems they should expect to see on their ships.

The culmination of the event was an open discussion and question and answer session about surface warfare held in the Mullen Auditorium. Several SWOS staff members were present and shared their experiences as surface warfare officers and spoke about the varied opportunities within the surface warfare community.

“When I was a Naval Academy midshipman, an officer mentor told me that no matter what career path and specialty I followed in the Navy, knowing how to handle a ship was a fundamental skill that every naval officer needed to have,” said Capt. Cory Howes, commanding officer of NAPS. “I am very grateful to SWOS for helping NAPS to establish this foundation for our future midshipmen and officers.”

SWOS readies sea-bound warriors to serve on surface combatants as officers, enlisted engineers and enlisted navigation professionals to fulfill the Navy's mission to maintain global maritime superiority.

NAPS mission is to enhance midshipman candidates' moral, mental, and physical foundations to prepare them for success at the U.S. Naval Academy.
