Expeditionary Mobile Base USNS Hershel “Woody” Williams (T-ESB 4) was delivered to Military Sealift Command (MSC) Thursday, during a brief ceremony onboard the ship at the General Dynamics NASSCO shipyard in San Diego, Calif.
The second in its class, the 784-foot-long ship honors Hershel “Woody” Williams, a retired U. S. Marine, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II.
The T-ESB is a flexible platform capable of supporting multiple missions including Air Mine Counter Measures (AMCM), special warfare missions, counter-piracy operations, maritime security operations, humanitarian aid and disaster relief missions and U.S. Marine Corps crisis response. The ship’s four-spot flight deck can embark MH-53 and MH-60 helicopters, and will be upgraded to support MV-22 tilt rotor aircraft.
“These ships are specifically designed and built to meet a broad spectrum of combatant commander requirements,” said Commodore Brett Hershman, commander, Military Sealift Command Pacific. “They are affordable, flexible, and reconfigurable based on the mission, alleviating the burden placed on other high-demand naval assets.”
Following testing and various qualifications and inspection, Williams will become operational and will deploy in support of national defense missions throughout the world.
