FORT MEADE, MARYLAND – U.S. Army Service members, Contractors, and Department of the Army Civilians of Asymmetric Warfare Group, and their family members kicked off the 9th Annual AWG Chili Cook-off, Feb. 15, 2018. The cook-off is an annual Family Readiness Group (FRG) fundraising event that supports Soldier and family readiness through organizational bonding and helps develop family support networks.

This year’s event had nine contestants competing for the coveted title of “Commander’s Chili Champion.” The AWG Command Sergeant Major, Command Sgt. Maj. Mike Masson, said “There is always stiff competition to be the winner.”

The commander of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Capt. Joe Bostick, helped host this year’s event. Historically, the FRG organization is command-sponsored at company and battalion levels, and fall under the responsibility of the unit’s commanding officer.

“One of the most important aspect of unit readiness is family readiness. This Chili cook-off allows the families and unit members to interact with each other and develop lasting bonds,” said Bostick.

The FRG also helps enhance the flow of information, increasing resiliency of unit soldiers and their families during periods of military deployments or operational separations.

The Asymmetric Warfare Group is no stranger to a high operational tempo and spouses continuously traveling. The AWG is a special organization that provides operational advisory support globally and rapid solution development to the Army and Joint Force commanders to enhance Soldier survivability and combat effectiveness against emerging threats. Therefore, “the real chili cook-off winner is fostering esprit de corps within AWG,” said Masson.

Leslie Burks, the AWG FRG Team Leader, said “It takes a lot of members to volunteer to put this all together, but these small coordinated events bring us together and shows those family members that they are not forgotten and that they are remembered and continually a part of this unit.”

Col. Timothy O’Brien, Commander of AWG, agreed with Mrs. Burks saying, “You can call us an organization or you can call us a family. It’s all one in the same and this is just one of those events that we have that bring people together so we can grow and learn who we are in a social setting.”

Congratulations to all the winners and the over fifty hungry chili eaters that made this a smashing event!
