SAVANNAH, Ga -- Approximately 1500 pieces of 3rd Inf. Div. Combat Aviation Brigade (known as CAB) unit cargo and over 40 helicopters returned by DOD chartered commercial vessel at the port of Savannah over the last week of August 2008.
"Since we cleared the port of all military cargo in less than 5 days, this was a very successful port re-deployment mission", said Maureen Casey, 3rd Inf. Div. deployment operations officer.
The unit's UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters were reconfigured after arrival by sealift and flown to nearby Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia. In addition to the 3rd Inf. Div. CAB helicopters, the Minn. ARNG and Wash. ARNG each had 10 UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters on the vessel.
The unit cargo touched back on Savannah ground after a successful 14 month deployment to Iraq. The CAB provided aviation support to Task Force Marne, 3rd Inf. Div, and logged over 140,000 rotary wing hours above Iraq.
