SAVANNAH, Ga - Approximately 40 Marines of the 2nd Beach and Terminal Company, 4th Landing Support Battalion, Savannah, Ga, took part in an awards ceremony on June 3, 2008, that recognized two of their Marines, Lance Cpl. A. J. Banks and Lance Cpl. J.T. Brown, with Army Achievement Medals for army seaport operations over the last nine months.
"These Marines have provided top notch support to our high tempo DOD seaport mission in Charleston and Savannah over the last nine months," said Lt. Col. Randolph Haufe, commander of the Army's 841st Transportation Seaport Battalion.
Banks and Brown supported multiple DOD seaport missions to include the deployment of the Army's 3rd Infantry Division out of Savannah, Ga, and the shipment of over 4,000 mine resistant ambush protected vehicles, MRAPs, out of Charleston's strategic seaport in South Carolina.
"It is great for my Marines to witness these awards in a unique joint environment," said Maj. John Sattely, commander of the Savannah Marines.
The Marines supported the DOD sealift mission by acting as the port support activity. The port support activity duties include traffic management, movement control, force protection, cargo documentation, and cargo inspections.
The Savannah Marines will continue to support the 841st Transportation Battalion and the Army Surface Deployment Distribution Command during MRAP sealift and unit deployments and re-deployments in Charleston and Savannah.
In addition to supporting DOD seaport missions and other logistics operations, the Savannah Marines are preparing to send detachments of personnel to upcoming missions in Morocco and Iraq.
