FORT WAYNE AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Ind. – The Mary Penrose Wayne Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution presented the 122nd Fighter Wing USO Deployment and Wellness Center with a book sharing hut aimed to assist members and their families with the difficulties of deployments, Oct. 3, 2015.

“This generous donation is meant for each of the families to enjoy and utilize,” said Kristy Curtin, Key Volunteer Team member. “It is yet another resource we can provide to support our service members.”

The goal was to provide a book hut to an area that does not have a library and therefore adds convenience for the residents. Members of the chapter donated books that stay true to their mission of preserving American history and patriotism while educating.

Many military members would agree that one of the most challenging parts of military life is the strain it puts on them and, even more so, their families. Having to explain to a child for the first time that their parent(s) is leaving for a significant amount of time can be quite difficult.

“People have recognized that it is hard to discuss what is going to happen,” said Curtin. “How to properly display their emotions and let their children know it is OK to express their emotions during a time of deployment. Hopefully some of these books will be able to provide that guidance.”

The mission of the DAR is comprised of historic preservation, education and patriotism. The chapter serves the community by recognizing local organizations for historic preservation efforts. They have provided 11 historic markers throughout the county, scholarships to students, and support to current military personnel and veterans by providing care packages, gifts, cards and assisting the USO with Honor Flights.

By having the book hut on base it allows those interested in educating themselves on military topics to choose a book and return it using the honor system or replace it with another book that would serve the overall purpose of educating others.

“This has been a great opportunity that the DAR has freely provided to us to support our military, their lives and historical importance,” said Curtin.
