SARAJEVO, Bosnia and Herzegovina — Members from the U.S. Air Force Europe Band, Wings of Dixie performed at the U.S. Embassy in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina July 1.
Hundreds of spectators to include foreign dignitaries, ambassadors and local nationals visibly enjoyed the music from the band with dancing and hand clapping.
Wings of Dixie also played at a local orphanage, children’s hospital, SOS Children Village and the Yellow Fortress in Sarajevo. The Yellow Fortress is the site where a cannon is fired at sunset during the Islamic month of Ramadan to mark the time for breaking the fast.
Wings of Dixie celebrated the American tradition of Dixieland jazz with their performance.
The band caught the ear of U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Giselle Wilz, NATO Headquarters Sarajevo commander. She was not only impressed with their performance, but in the manner their represented the United States.
“As I looked in the crowd, I saw people from various countries and backgrounds come together with music being the common denominator,” said Wilz. “Language barriers may exist, however, music is universal and has the power to influence and inspire.”
Wilz coined each band member for their professionalism and thanked them for being international ambassadors.
