FORWARD OPERATION BASE KALSU, Iraq – Based on a tip from a local resident, coalition forces found a large weapons cache in Iskandariyah, Iraq, Feb. 19.

Company A, 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division Soldiers made the discovery near an electrical substation. The cache contained 1,000 7.62 mm rounds, 500 7.62 link ammunition, 10 107 mm rockets, seven MJ-1 fuses, four OG-7V projectiles, six booster motors, two PG-7 projectiles, two 60 mm mortars, five M112 C-4 explosives, one M118 C-4 explosive, eight non-electrical blasting caps, 100 feet of yellow time fuse and 20 feet of brown detonation cord.

"The cache is extremely significant because it consisted entirely of high quality, good-conditioned explosives and projectiles," said 1st Lt. David Clamon, 2nd Platoon leader, Co. A. "The capture of a cache of this magnitude severely limits the enemy's ability to operate in our AO (area of operation)."

This find was the third cache uncovered in the area over the past month.

"Iraqi civilians in Iskandariyah are tired of extremist attempts to disrupt the peace that the city has enjoyed for the last few months," said Capt. Michael Penney, Company A. "When good citizens know of weapons being brought into the area they immediately call or seek us out and give us the information."
