    Story by Capt. Jessica Tackaberry

    2nd Combat Aviation Brigade

PYEONGTAEK, South Korea - Perspective is hard to gain when you have not experienced it yourself. United States Army Soldiers have the unique privilege and opportunity to experience different cultures, history, landscapes, and countries all over the world as they are stationed or deployed to areas across the globe. They often times witness history unfold first hand giving them perspective, which makes them better Soldiers, ambassadors, and neighbors.

Soldiers from the 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade took the time to coordinate a staff visit on Jan. 23 to numerous locations across the Korean Peninsula. They visited the White Horse battlefield, the Peace Observatory, the 2nd Infiltration Tunnel, and the 1st UN Memorial, which are all sites related to the Korean War.

Staff Sgt. Scott Isom, a native of Las Vegas, NV. and an intel analyst with Headquarters Headquarter Company, 2nd CAB, 2nd Infantry Division helped to plan, coordinate and research the staff visits to these sites. As a history buff, Isom researched the sites and was an integral member of the planning team.

“To see in person rather than on a map was eye opening”, said Isom.

Isom found greater pride as the realization that he and his fellow Soldiers are continuing to assist in defending the same ground as he described during these visits.

Capt. Steven Mohr, the commander of Headquarters Headquarter Company, 2nd CAB, 2nd Inf. Div., stated that future trips to other historic sites across the Korean peninsula are planned to learn more about the history of South Korea.

“Understanding why we are here is important to the mission, and knowing the shared history helps resonate the deep connection we have with South Korea”, said Mohr.

Senior leaders from 2nd CAB encourage all Soldiers from the brigade to get out and explore Korea to learn as much as they can from their Korean neighbors while they are stationed here.

The connection that U.S. Army Soldiers get to experience with their allies, the friendships they build, the history they learn and the deeper understanding of how things impact the world around them helps build their perspective and grow as Soldiers, ambassadors, and neighbors.
