JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. - The Draper Armor Leadership Award is given annually to promote, sustain, and recognize effective leadership in armor and cavalry units. The award also recognizes individuals who exhibit excellence in leadership or training, or who make significant contributions to the force. The Draper Combat Leadership Trust Fund located at the US Army Armor School, Fort Benning, Georgia, finances the award program.
The 7th Infantry Division presented the Draper Award to leaders of a cavalry scout troop, Jan. 23. Receiving awards were Capt. Kenneth Word and 1st Sgt. Richard Miska, A troop, 1st Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment "Warhorse," 3rd Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division.
"This award is less about what we've done, and more a testament to our Soldiers, and the way they get after the mission every day," Word said.
Established in 1924 by Lt. Col. Wycliffe P. Draper, “to promote combat leadership in the cavalry of the Army of the United States,” the Draper award recognizes those outstanding Armor leaders who have demonstrated remarkable initiative and exceptional fortitude in the areas of doctrine, tactics, training, and mentorship. Their exemplary service ensures Armor will forever remain the “Combat Arm of Decision.”
