MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - Commissaries across the Department of Defense have kicked off their 15th annual search for the brightest, most well-rounded military children worldwide to compete for the 2015 Scholarships for Military Children Program.

The scholarship program was created as an avenue for recognizing military children based on academic achievement, participation in school, community and volunteer activities, work experience and a written essay.

According to Maureen Burnetsky, acting store director for the Cherry Point Commissary, through the Fisher House Foundation Military Children Scholarship, winners will receive a non-renewable grant for $2,000.

Applicants must be unmarried children of active duty personnel, reserve, guard or retired military members. They can be no older than 23 and are required to be registered in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System database and be a current holder of a dependent military ID card.

“It is great to be able to provide this opportunity to service member’s families,” said Burnetsky. “This is our way of giving back to those who shop at our stores and give back to our country. This takes a small portion off the large burden of paying for colleges or universities.”

Those who meet the requirements and wish to participate must be enrolled or planning to enroll in a full-time undergraduate degree program at an accredited U.S. college or university during the 2015 fall semester or term.

According to Burnetsky, high school applicants must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a scale of 4.0 to be eligible for application.

Each scholarship is presented courtesy of the Fisher House Foundation and several other sponsors.

Applications must be submitted to a local commissary by close of business Feb. 13, 2015. Packages may either be hand delivered or shipped using the U.S. Postal Service.

For more information, applicants or sponsors should contact scholarship managers at 856-616-9311 or visit http://www.militaryscholar.org/sfmc/donate.html.
