BURLINGTON, Vt. - Brig. Gen. Marcus Jannitto, Chief of Staff of the Rhode Island Air National Guard, visited the Airmen of Vermont to discuss leadership with them.
Jannitto met with the Vermont Air National Guard (VTANG) to get feedback on what makes for effective leadership. He was concerned not only with effectiveness within the unit but also outside the base as many members of the VTANG balance their military service with a civilian career and a family.
“Leadership does not happen in a vacuum,” Jannitto said. “Effectively leading a unit requires communication across all levels. The more we make it part of our daily dialogue and conversations the more we will all be able to step up and share the responsibility.”
Jannitto emphasized that there is no set list of qualities that make someone a good leader. There is no single behavior that will work because every person is different, but that a good leader should seek to inspire the people around them.
“The reason for the success at the VTANG is clear in its community,” said Jannitto. “Members of the unit are able to share their experience and have open discussion with both their peers and their superiors. As new members come in they are welcomed and guided so that they are comfortable and ready to share in the responsibility of being an Airman.”
He went on to say what a privilege it was to visit the VTANG, citing the unit’s strong reputation in the Guard community due to its strong leadership and open community, resulting in the unit’s frequent achievements and proven success rate with missions and trainings.
