HIROSHIMA, Japan - The School Age Care center aboard Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, hosted a trip to the Transportation Museum in Hiroshima, Dec. 23, 2014.

Venessa Abner, a program assistant with SAC, said the point of taking the children to the Transportation Museum was to learn about all the different types of transportation used throughout history.

“School Age Care takes them on different trips and tours to enrich their knowledge about history and the culture of Japan,” said Abner.

According to Abner, the kids learn a lot from trips like this because they like getting out of the SAC building to see and experience new things.

“They might hear or read something at school about history so actually going out and seeing it makes it more interesting and easier for the kids to understand,” said Abner.

According to Amy Claessens, assistant professor at the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy, research proves that students who are taught using hands-on methods outperform others.

The museum provided an exhibit displaying all types of methods of transportation including, but not limited to: boats, airplanes, trains, cars and bikes.

An interactive bicycle course made a proactive learning environment possible for the children.

“I had fun riding the bikes and I saw a lot of ships, planes, and trains that I’ve never seen before,” said Jamall Garrett, a child with the SAC.

Abner said overall she thinks it was a great experience for the kids and hopes to do it more often. For more information on the Transportation Museum call their visitor information desk at +81-82-878-6211.
