MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. – Marines with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron Motorcycle Club gathered for a special quarterly motorcycle ride aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., Dec. 22.

Newer riders ride with veteran motorcyclists to learn from them and gain experience during these rides. But it was the box full of toys and their destination at Rady Children’s Hospital – San Diego that truly mattered to them.

“We gathered 153 toys for the children at the hospital,” said Master Sgt. Christopher Rosenfelt, the club’s vice president. “It’s Christmas, and we wanted a chance to give back to the community who supports us and blesses us all year long.”

Other members of the club felt that the children are very deserving of these presents and more.

“They go through a lot,” said Master Sgt. Gary Greenbush, outgoing club president, taking his last ride with the group. “It makes me feel good that these young Marines are doing something for the community. We, as motorcycle riders, usually don’t receive the regard of the community on the road or otherwise. This gives us a chance to give back and generate a positive relationship with the community.”

The motorcyclists inspected their bikes, geared up, went over the route of travel, and then took off together for the hospital.

Rady Children’s Hospital – San Diego offers pediatric treatment for everything except burns, and just being in the hospital can be a trying time in any child’s life, according to Lori Mathios, director of annual giving Rady Children’s Hospital Foundation.

“It helps the kids tremendously,” said Mathios. “They may have been here a long time or have to go through a difficult procedure, or may even be bored, and this helps put a smile on their faces. The kids don’t want be here on Christmas, but a toy helps get their mind off the fact that they are here.”

With their delivery a success, senior club members hope to continue giving back to the community and gather more riders at club events.

“It warms my heart to see that they would do this for the kids,” said Mathios. “We really enjoyed having them here and we hope to maybe see them again next year.”
