    II Marine Expeditionary Force

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Cadence echoes off the buildings as Marines with 10th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division run to the obstacle course to begin their morning PT session during their corporal’s course aboard Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Dec 8, 2014.

Throughout the course, the Marines learned and discussed various topics that noncommissioned officers should be aware of, such as the sword and guidon manual, mentoring and counseling, and cutting scores. Along with their classwork, they were graded on the appearance of their uniforms and the organization of their wall lockers.

“The course was able to go a little more in depth on things that I should be doing so that when I get back to my unit I can make changes for the better,” said Cpl. Logan Boesch, a light armored vehicle crewman with 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division. “I can start getting paperwork on my guys so I can back up their pros and cons - I can help them advance to the next rank.”

This course tested the Marines both mentally and physically with a total of 21 hours of practical application, 16 hours of performance examinations and a 7 mile tactical movement.

“An educated Marine is a better Marine,” said Gunnery Sgt. Emmanuel Sable, a ground communications technician with Headquarters Battalion, 10th Marines. “This course kind of bridges the gap between a Marine within their military occupational specialty and the Marine within their entire Marine organization. A lot of us concentrate on just our MOS, but when it comes to things outside that specific MOS, we don’t all have the same level of education when it comes to tactics or leadership.”

Not only does the regiment offer corporal’s course, they also instruct a lance corporal seminar, which is a course that allows Marines to take the first step to becoming a better, more knowledgeable Marine.

“Lance corporal seminar gives the Marines the tools to make the right decisions,” said Sable. “They choose whether to make the right decision or not, but at the very least the Marine Corps is providing them with the knowledge of what they should do morally and ethically.”

Fifty-one Marines graduated from the corporal’s course on Dec. 19, 2014, and are on their way to better their unit and ultimately the Marine Corps as a whole, according to Sgt. Kevin Moody, an artillery radar operator with 10th Marines.

The next Lance Cpl. Seminar will begin in January 2015.
