    310th Expeditionary Sustainment Command

FORT HOOD, Texas - The 310th ESC joined the Temple Chamber of Commerce joined to try and make sure families of deployed Soldiers from Fort Hood would not go without.

The Christmas Holiday is quickly approaching Fort Hood Soldiers and their families. With that in mind, the Temple Chamber of Commerce joined together to try and make sure families of deployed Soldiers from Fort Hood would not go without. “Operation Winter Wonderland”, sponsored by the chamber, got under way January 14th, this past Sunday.

Winter Wonderland is an event designed to provide the spouses and children of deployed service members the opportunity to interact with each other while the Soldiers are away.

“The concept of it was to provide moms or dads, whichever family member is not deployed, a chance to be a parent and do crafts and what not, rather than being the organizer,” said Vicky Wells, Family Readiness Support Assistant, 4th Sustainment Brigade, 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary). “They actually got to go around and do activities with the kids instead of always being the behind-the-scenes person always planning everything.”

Vicky worked closely with other chamber members and Fort Hood leaders to make the event a success. A total of 43 members attended with about 80 family members and friends showing up, including volunteers.

“This is the second year and this year we had a bigger turn out than we did last year. Last year was partly due to weather, but we only had 5 kids last year,” said Wells.

The children made a variety of different Christmas-themed crafts with the help of volunteers. Local businesses such as H-E-B and Dollar General donated toys and gingerbread materials. The children were also read Christmas stories by Rod Henry, President of the Temple Chamber along with Brig. Gen. Michael Dillard, commanding general, 310th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) before Santa Claus arrived.

Amanda Suprobo, the spouse of a deployed Army captain, was grateful she could bring her children to the event.

“When the Army provides an outlet for the kids to get together and be around people who understand, even without them saying ‘I understand your dad’s gone, I miss mine too’, it’s a different kind of bond,” said Suprobo.

The Temple Chamber of Commerce, along with the City of Temple, are 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary)’s partner city near Fort Hood. Currently as the 13th SC (E) is deployed, the community supports the family members of deployed Soldiers with various events such as Operation Winter Wonderland. The 310th SC (E), while fulfilling the mission of the 13th SC (E) on Fort Hood, also participates with and supports the community partnerships.
