GREENVILLE, N.C. - Marines with Marine Air Control Squadron 2 baked more than 200 cookies for families living at the Ronald McDonald House in Greenville, North Carolina, Dec. 13, 2014.
Volunteers with Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point’s Single Marine Program baked cookies to spread holiday cheer to families of ill or injured children staying at the Ronald McDonald House and receiving treatment in the Greenville area.
“Today we are baking sugar cookies for the families who live here,” said Cpl. Phillip White, a logistics and embarkation specialist with MACS-2. “We brought presents for the children to help them enjoy Christmas like other kids their age.”
This is the second time White, a native of Starkville, Mississippi, has volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House.
“Last year was just as fun as this year,” said White. “It’s important for the Marines to help out whenever we can. It shows what the Marine Corps stands for,” said White.
The Ronald McDonald House is a temporary housing facility for families of seriously ill or injured children. The house allows families to be near loved ones without having to spend money and time traveling back-and-forth to the hospital.
The mission of the house is to provide the families with a home away from home for the residents of the house.
The majority of the Greenville Ronald McDonald House families are military, according to Meghan King, the house manager.
“I think volunteering is a wonderful way for Marines to give back to help their fellow comrades and families going through tough times,” said King. “The residents are so grateful to know that there are people who care enough about them as strangers to take the time to provide hot meals for them to enjoy.”
