MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Fifty students with the Navy Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps from Mooresville High School, North Carolina, visited Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Dec. 5 in order to get a glimpse into life aboard base.
The students got the chance to experience life in the barracks, eat at a mess hall and see Marines and sailors perform numerous jobs.
One stop for the group was the base Provost Marshal Office’s kennels, where handlers demonstrated K-9 training and tactics.
“It’s great to demonstrate our skills at the kennels,” said Sgt. Chad Perraut, PMO canine chief trainer and Dallas, Texas, native. “It’s always fun to talk to kids and make them laugh.”
The dog handlers with PMO show their skills to the public in order to display their abilities toward their mission of security and safety.
“It’s always great having visitors see what we do,” said officer Joshua Smith, a K-9 police officer with PMO. “We take pride in showing what we do, and hopefully we inspire future law enforcement or military.”
The dog handlers and their dogs showed various skills, from basic to advanced tactics.
“We demonstrated obedience, the obstacle course, drug detection and how we use those as building blocks,” said Smith a Redondo Beach, California, native. “I like dealing with the public. We do walking patrols at housing and business areas, and getting to interact with people is rewarding.”
The handlers showcased a simulated incident where an armed suspect was apprehended with the help of man’s best friend, as well as aggression work and use of force techniques. After the demonstrations, the dog handlers answered students’ questions concerning their line of work.
“The visit is eye-opening for them,” said Charlie Gibson, senior naval science instructor for the NJROTC Mooresville High School. “A lot of them live far away and don’t have access to the base. The visit is a treat for students and it shows them what the military is about.”
