MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Key personnel with Marine Corps Installations East and Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune gathered to prepare for winter weather with a tabletop exercise at the commanding general’s briefing room at Building 1 aboard base Dec. 5.

The exercise briefed the staff on the standardized processes for base operations in the event of ice or snow storms.

“The purpose of the exercise was to gather key personnel and talk through the established procedures for handling the base during winter weather events,” said John Reeve, MCI-East MCB Camp Lejeune operations officer. “We have a destructive weather order that has an expanded winter weather portion.”

MCI-EAST-MCB CAMLEJO 3440.6B dictates what steps are to be taken in case of inclement weather.

“During the exercise, we went over our tools and methods,” said Tim Harvey, MCI-East MCB Camp Lejeune regional emergency manager and New Bern, North Carolina, native. “We also went over how to mitigate, respond and recover in the event of a storm.”

When a storm is eminent, personnel gather and assess possible hazards and solutions, such as reducing road traffic, cancelling activities or preparing shelters.

“The key to everything is that we have to get all the players together, remind everyone of the established procedures and adjust those procedures to the specifics of the storm,” said Reeve, a Jacksonville, North Carolina, native.

Base leaders coordinate with local emergency services to ensure consistent measures are taken during a storm, said Harvey.

The exercise provides an avenue to ensure safety for the base community in case of destructive weather. It allows each aspect of response efforts to understand its role and how it relates to others.
