FORT BRAGG, N.C. – With the holiday season approaching, many families will go through the holidays in need.

In an effort to give back to the Fayetteville community and help local families, the 1st Sustainment Command (Theater) Chaplain’s Office worked alongside the Fayetteville Urban Ministries packaging holiday food baskets for families in the Fayetteville community Dec. 2.

Fayetteville Urban Ministries is a non-profit organization that assists individuals and families struggling through crisis situations in the local community.

The community service project puts Soldiers in touch with what is happening in their communities and affords them an opportunity to give back, said Sgt. Brandon Ervin, 1st TSC chaplain assistant and native of Dothan, Alabama.

Through the efforts of the volunteers, the ministry was able to package and organize the massive amounts of food they receive every year around the holiday season.

This year’s food drive yielded 152 holiday food bags and 50 personal hygiene gift bags for those in need, said Master Sgt. Deitra Alam, 1st TSC Master chaplain assistant.

The Soldiers’ hard work and selfless service was most appreciated by the staff of FUM who felt the project will impact many lives this holiday season.

“I appreciate the commander allowing this,” said Janice Voter, Emergency Assistance Coordinator. “It’s just a wonderful feeling that they are willing to come here, make a difference, and have an impact on those that are in need.”
