BISMARCK, N.D. - A formal welcome home ceremony will honor about 40 North Dakota National Guard Soldiers who completed a yearlong peacekeeping mission in Kosovo. Members of the Bismarck-based Company C, 2nd Battalion, 285th Regiment will be lauded for their service during a Freedom Salute ceremony at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Army Aviation Support Facility in Bismarck.

The unit returned to North Dakota in October after operating UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters as part of the Kosovo Forces (KFOR 18) Aviation Task Force in support of the U.S.-led Multi National Battle Group East, which conducts military peace support operations in Kosovo. The aviation Soldiers provided air transport for U.S. and NATO forces, to include training and assistance to the Kosovo Security Forces.

Commanding the unit is Capt. Russ Sundby, of Horace, North Dakota, while 1st Sgt. Jim Lind, of Bismarck, is the unit's senior noncommissioned officer.

During Saturday's ceremony, more than half of the Soldiers who served in Kosovo will receive additional honors for having deployed two or more times. Additionally, family members and supporters will be recognized for their contributions to a successful deployment.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple and Maj. Gen. David Sprynczynatyk, North Dakota adjutant general, are scheduled to render remarks during the event, which is open to the public.

Traditionally, Freedom Salute ceremonies occur about three months after Soldiers return from a deployment and coincide with the third Yellow Ribbon reintegration weekend that brings together Soldiers and family members for programs and reintegration activities to foster strong, resilient military families.
