FORT STEWART, Ga. – Food service soldiers from the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, dining facility prepared a special Thanksgiving meal and won an installation wide dining facility competition, Nov. 25, on Fort Stewart, Ga.

Dining facilities from around the post competed in the event and each one selected a unique theme to portray as part of the meal. The Vanguard Dining Facility chose Egypt as its theme and won best overall dining facility, best decorated facility and best cuisine.

“We wanted to do something outside the box that would be really unexpected,” said Sgt. Ebony Jordan, a food service specialist with 703rd Brigade Support Battalion, 4th IBCT, who also served as the event coordinator.

“The biggest challenge for me was providing the support to make the vision come alive,” said Sgt. 1st Class Itaski Webb, who’s been the Vanguard Dining Facility manager since August. “There were a lot of great ideas the soldiers wanted to implement.”

Jordan, a native of Charleston, South Carolina, who has participated in numerous contests in the past three years as member of the dining facility, said the event took five months to plan. This included a few obstacles to overcome.

“The show pieces were a challenge,” said Jordan.

The food displays started in the foyer with pyramid shaped, golden colored cakes on beds of real sand. The first few steps into the serving area laid a life size sarcophagus shaped cake covered in painstaking detail with icing to complete the veneer.

There were many other displays throughout the facility including an Egyptian dress made of candy and tortillas, a large pyramid shaped display of a sphinx which lit up, and an Egyptian themed stage, complete with two thrones and palm fronds, where a dance performance took place.

The contest served as a great distraction for the many soldiers who are far from home during this holiday as well.

“It gives [the soldiers] an opportunity to enjoy a family environment and a delicious meal,” said Jordan.

“I’ve been told by many soldiers how much the extra mile was appreciated,” added Webb. “It was truly rewarding to see the smiles and looks of amazement on the soldiers’ faces as they encounter our facility for the first time that day.”
