ARLINGTON, Va. - The National Industries for the Blind recognized six Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support employees during the organization’s national conference in Arlington, Virginia.

Employees from the medical, construction and equipment, and industrial hardware supply chains were recognized for their support of the AbilityOne program, said Mike McCall, small business director for DLA Troop Support.

“Our relationship with NIB is integral to our commitment to the AbilityOne program,” said McCall. “DLA Troop Support proudly supports businesses that employ those who are blind.”

AbilityOne is a federal government initiative to help people with significant disabilities find employment through its partner agencies, the National Industries for the Blind and Source America.

DLA Troop Support Commander Army Brig. Gen Steven Shapiro was the keynote speaker at the conference. He said the relationship between NIB and the military dates back to World War II, before DLA was formally established as an agency.

Shapiro also thanked those DLA Troop Support employees being recognized for their continued efforts to help keep and create jobs for visually-impaired people.

NIB recognized three employees from the medical supply chain for their recent contract for medical made-to-order kits, allowing DLA Troop Support customers to order customized medical kits, said Theresa Rucci, optical and laboratory integrated supplier team chief. Rucci accepted the award on behalf of herself, Roger Dixon, director of supplier operations, and Nicole Welsh, acquisition specialist.

“I’m excited to be part of this team, because it is a joint partnership with DLA Troop Support Medical Supply Operations Directorate and National Industries for the Blind,” she said. “The quality products NIB supplies will provide support to the warfighter while creating and sustaining new employment for people who are blind.”

DLA Troop Support Construction and Equipment’s Stephen Wielgosz, lighting IST chief, and Dan Ferry, lighting and heating, ventilation and air conditioning division chief, were recognized for their efforts to establish new national service numbers for tactical flashlights, creating 15 new jobs for visually-impaired people. NIB also recognized DLA Troop Support Construction and Equipment Director of Supplier Operations Ralph Lund for his support of new project development.

“Working with NIB helps execute the DLA Troop Support mission, as well as creates and sustains jobs for people who are blind,” Wielgosz said. “Knowing the support we made to NIB had an impact on the creation of jobs for people who are blind made the conference attendance memorable.”

NIB also recognized DLA Troop Support Industrial Hardware’s Abin Mathai, contract specialist, for his work in procuring hardware items like padlocks, strap webbing, aircraft engine parts and machine safety parts.

“It truly is a great honor to be recognized for my efforts,” he said. “It feels good to know that my small contribution had a positive impact on employing people who are blind through the AbilityOne Program.”

Troop Support employees who were unable to attend the NIB national conference were recognized Oct. 29 during the DLA Troop Support/AbilityOne Day Expo.
