MCCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE, Kan. - She doesn’t work in a fancy studio with the best and newest tools; She doesn’t even have her own space set aside to do what she loves. All she needs is a kitchen table to enter into her own world, a world that just happens to be spreading to and inspiring others.
Master Sgt. Hilda Holmes, 22nd Air Refueling Wing Inspector General Inspections wing self-assessment program manager, has always wanted to delve into the world of art, but it wasn’t until about six years ago that she finally decided to take a college class in beginner’s art.
“I liked going to my class because I learned all the different medias,” said Holmes. “It’s amazing the different things that you learn, and it’s not as hard as you think it is. I love it.”
Little did she know that her first and only art class was the spark of a growing passion for her, as well as those around her.
She began regularly spending her personal time drawing with inks and also enjoys sharing her hobby during family time.
“Both of my daughters are very creative and we draw, paint and color every chance we get,” she said.
Her passion has slowly developed from a personal hobby, to a family activity and is now spilling over into her work place.
Master Sgt. Mirta Jones, 22nd Air Refueling Wing Inspector General Inspections inspections planner, and Holmes’ co-worker, said she was impressed when she happened to see some of Holmes’ work.
“I didn’t know she could draw so well,” said Mirta. “I was surprised to see how beautiful her work was.”
Seeing that artwork was all it took for Jones to become inspired and go out to buy a water-color kit to begin experimenting and creating her own works of art.
“I just jumped right in,” said Jones. “It’s relaxing and now I have a new hobby.”
Holmes may have inspired Jones’ new hobby but that inspiration was reversed as Holmes was pushed to take her work to the next step.
Holmes heard about an art contest that was being held by McConnell’s Arts and Crafts Center. She knew she wanted to submit a few pieces but wasn’t sure if she would be able to find the time.
Jones gave her the extra push and words of support needed to get her artwork from her home to the art center.
“It’s rewarding when you finish because you can actually see the result and other people can enjoy it,” said Holmes.
It doesn’t matter if she’s taking a few spare minutes drawing a quick sketch or spending hours coloring with her daughters, Holmes doesn’t do it to be the best artist or to win a contest.
“I do art for my personal enjoyment,” she said. “Drawing is very calming to me. It helps me focus and ground myself.”
