DENVER, Colo. – The Denver Broncos paid tribute to service members from the four branches of the Armed Forces as well as Coast Guardsmen during a “Salute to Service” game at Sports Authority Field at Mile High, Nov. 23.

Joint Task Force Carson Soldiers and other service members walked across the field during the halftime show in step with their various service songs and the roar of the crowd.

“The Broncos organization is honoring our service men and women as part of military appreciation day here at Sports Authority Field; which says a lot about this great organization to do this for our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen out here,” said Fort Carson’s Garrison Commander Col. Joel D. Hamilton.

Other organizations partnered with the Broncos to honor the troops. The United Services Automobile Association provided tickets and a pre-game tailgate for 200 military members.

“As the Official Military Appreciation Sponsor of the Broncos, USAA considers the ‘Salute to Service’ game as the most important game of the season,” said Deanne Funkhouser, USAA local Military Affairs representative. “Being held during the month of November when we honor our veterans gives this game special meaning and it is a major highlight of our partnership with the Broncos to show appreciation for our military, veterans and their families.

“Throughout the NFL season, USAA’s “Salute to Service” platform provides exclusive access and once-in-a-lifetime experiences at various NFL-related events and programs for our military, veterans and their families,” said Funkhouser.

Soldiers were able to meet a few of the Broncos players throughout the day leaving a lasting impression.

“It feels really good (to be on the field),” said Sgt. Ryan Hatfield, human resources NCO, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 4th Combat Aviation Brigade, 4th Inf. Div. “It was really great to be out there and meet the players. I really appreciate this; it’s a great opportunity for Soldiers.”

In addition to the half-time honors, Command Sgt. Maj. David M. Clark, 4th Inf. Div. and Fort Carson, and Hamilton were at midfield for the coin toss. Hamilton said the real highlight of his day though was the interaction between the troops and the players.

“My favorite part was just seeing the look on a lot of our Soldiers’ faces as they are up and personal with these players, and seeing the players come up to the Soldiers and other service men and women thanking them for their service,” Hamilton said.
