CORONADO, Calif. – The Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (Fleet Readiness and Logistics) recently announced the winners and honorable mentions of the 2014 Community Service Environmental Stewardship Flagship Award, recognizing commands for exemplary community service that promotes good stewardship of environmental resources.
Naval Base Coronado (NBC) received the large shore category award and will receive a commemorative plaque from N4. NBC is also the Commander Navy Region Southwest nominee for the Health, Safety, and Fitness Flagship and the USS Bainbridge (CGN 25) Award for Overall Excellence.
“We are very proud of the hard work and dedication of our Sailors, local community members, and environmental department,” said Capt. Christopher Sund, NBC commanding officer. “This award represents the Navy’s commitment to responsible environmental stewardship and our own commitment to being a good neighbor with the local community.”
NBC provided several volunteer opportunities for both tenant commands and the community to assist with its conservation measures, such as beach clean-ups, bird walks, Plover patrols, wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, Channel Islands restoration, and informational booths aimed at increasing knowledge about energy conservation, recycling, and alternative commuting options.
NBC is home to unique wildlife and plants, many of which are federally protected under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). As a federal agency, the Department of Defense (DoD) is required to conserve species listed under the ESA and must consult with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for impacts to these species. NBC strives to minimize environmental impacts and support conservation efforts alongside mission essential operations and training evolutions.
The Navy Community Service awards recognize Navy commands that engage in exemplary voluntary community service activities. The Environmental Stewardship Flagship recognizes the best year-round volunteer supported program or special project that promotes good stewardship of environmental resources. The Environmental Stewardship Flagship is one of five flagships in the Navy Community Service program; the other four flagships are Personal Excellence Partnership, Project Good Neighbor, Campaign Drug Free, and Health, Safety, and Fitness.
