JOINT BASE MYER-HENDERSON HALL, Va. - Nobody runs faster than a pre-Thanksgiving turkey – except for cold Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall Turkey Trot 5K Run and 1-Mile Walk participants.

Nov. 14’s race day produced temperatures which hovered a few degrees above the freezing mark, yet close to 100 runners and walkers registered, warmed up and thawed in the Fort Myer Fitness Center before the 6:35 a.m. start took the athletes through the streets of the Fort Myer portion of Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall.

The top male finisher in the sixth annual race was Brian Daugherty, while Yuko Whitestone was the female winner. The top overall male walker was Kevin Steward and the first female walker to cross the Fort Myer Fitness Center finish line was Syredia Robinson. The unit with the most participants taking part was the National Guard Bureau.

Following the race, joint base Commander Col. Mike Henderson met the winners, distributed medals and addressed the turkey trotters and walkers.

“This is the biggest race we have, and the biggest race I’ve seen here so far,” Henderson said to the crowd. “We have some pretty dedicated racers and staff to put on a Turkey Trot each year.”

MWR Recreation and Events Specialist and Race Organizer Todd Hopkins thanked Henderson Hall’s Marine Corps Community Services, which assisted with race support. The pre-Thanksgiving race is a joint effort between Henderson Hall MCCS and the Fort Myer Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Directorate, and both races are part of the Marine’s Oohrah/Semper Fit run series and Fort Myer’s Commander’s Race Series and the 2014 Holiday Run Series.

The next Fort Myer race is scheduled for Dec. 5 when the Ugly Sweater Run and Walk concludes the 2014 joint base racing schedule.

Runners and walkers may register for free until Dec. 1 for the final JBM-HH run.
