JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, Va. - As the holidays rapidly approach and kitchens begin to fill with the recognizable staples of the season, it is important to remember that during this time of economic uncertainty there are families in need of help to ensure a successful holiday season.

The Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, First Sergeant Council hosts its annual Operation Warmheart food drive during the month of November to provide service members and their families with a complete holiday meal.

While Operation Warmheart is a nonprofit organization that distributes charitable funds to Joint Base Langley-Eustis service members and their families all year long, the organization disperses the majority of its funding during the holiday season.

"Operation Warmheart is the first sergeants' avenue to help JBLE service members through hardships," said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Liesbeth Bowen, 633rd Wing Staff Agency first sergeant. "We normally provide service members in need with funding for food or bills once they've exhausted all options."

Over the next couple of weeks, the council will be collecting monetary and canned food donations in order to put together holiday baskets for service members.

According to Bowen, the council is already expected to build over 400 baskets due to a higher demand of families in need of assistance.

"What is unique about this year's operation versus last year's is the number of basket requests [we have received]," said Bowen. "We are making a bigger push to get what we need and whatever we don't get in canned goods, we will use the monetary donations to purchase more to fill the baskets."

In order to collect donations for Airmen and Soldiers, tables will be located outside the Langley commissary and Exchange for the next two weeks.

Bowen added that by donating to the Operation Warmheart food drive, individuals will be supporting their JBLE community.

"Even if you don't have the money, just your time is enough to help us collect funding and help out a fellow service member," said Bowen.
