GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba - In recognition of the many veterans who have served our country, a tribute was held at W.T. Sampson Elementary School, Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2014. Students gave presentations to show their appreciation to service members.

“I want the children to understand they have to give of themselves; they can’t be selfish,” said Wanda Robinson-Caton, the chairperson of the Veterans Day Committee for W.T. Sampson Elementary School.

Many people were involved with the event, from Rear Adm. Kyle Cozad the commander of JTF-GTMO, Comdr. Colin Caswell, the Executive Officer Naval Station Guantanamo Bay. and Command Sgt. Maj. Juan Hidalgo, of JTF-GTMO, to the children of the elementary, middle and high school.

“I think we need to honor those who serve, because of them we can go on our vacations and get all of the things we have,” Robinson-Caton said.

The presentations were that much more meaningful because it came from the students, who still came in on their day off.
“Sgt. Maj. Hidalgo always participates. He is one person I can count on to help get participants,” Robinson-Caton said.

Though some participants have helped with the tribute for longer, there are some who volunteered for the first time.

“This is my first time helping out; I’ve been serving for 10 years. A lot of people make sacrifices, putting other parts of their lives on hold, like college or family,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Adam Caballero, a volunteer on the Veterans Day Committee.

The connections between our military families and our Service Members shine on days like this, when the community comes together to celebrate and honor our fallen heroes.

“I just want to give back to the community, everybody here is very supportive of our military and what we do here,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Kevin Ray, a Veterans Day Committee volunteer.

The morning was filled with patriotic songs sung by the younger children, and each branches song was beautifully done by the middle and high school students present.

“I feel as though we did an amazing job today, and everything went really smooth, I’m proud of what they’ve done today,” Robinson-Caton said.
