IWAKUNI, Japan - When the dust settled at the end of the Department of Defense Dependents Schools Far East Division II Championship game at the Matthew C. Perry High School football field aboard Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, Nov. 8, 2014, the crowd just finished watching the highest scoring Far East title game.

The Daegu Warriors, from Camp Walker, South Korea (7-1) defeated the Matthew C. Perry Samurai (5-2) 60-50, taking home their fourth Division II football championship.

The schools accumulated more than 900 yards of total offense and 110 points.

The scoring started early and often, as each teams’ defense could not stop the others’ offensive onslaught. At halftime, the score was 34-25 in favor of Daegu.

The two teams could not be more different in offensive philosophy and history. The Warriors run a spread offense that utilizes their player’s speed and have been in the championship game five of the past six years. The Samurai are a power run orientated team that are in their first year of varsity after the school dropped their football program in 2004.

“We got mean and nasty in the trenches, but it just wasn’t enough,” said Frank Macias, the Samurai’s head coach. “I’m proud of the boys giving 100 percent, but there was just too much speed (from Daegu). Hats off to Daegu, they played a very good game.”
The duo of DeAndre Rosalie and DeMarco Andrews were too much for the Samurai defense. Rosalie, the Warrior’s quarterback, was 5-5 passing for 169 yards and four touchdowns. Andrews, the Warrior’s running back and workhorse, ran for 228 yards and four touchdowns.

There were highlights on the other side of the ball as well. The four Samurai running backs accumulated more than 500 rushing yards. They were led by senior Jarell Davis, who had 285 yards and three touchdowns in his last high school football game.

While the loss left a bitter taste in the mouths of the Samurai players, there is solace knowing this team left its mark in the Matthew C. Perry High School history books as the only varsity football team to reach the championship game and, according to Macias, they have laid the foundation for future of the program.
“That team was a great team over there, they came back and our kids answered, they came back and our kids answered, it was a great game,” said Ken Walter, the Daegu head coach. “I think it was the best game I have been a part of in my 20 years of coaching.”

This could also be the beginning of a new rivalry as these two teams are returning many players for next season.

“I’ve been coaching for many years and being around these Samurai boys is fantastic,” said Macias. “It’s a lot of fun to be around them and see their effort and hard work. The support from their parents, Iwakuni and the entire community is awesome. I love being here.”
