CAMP JOHNSON, N.C. - Each day, Mess Hall 455 serves more than 3,000 meals to Marines and sailors aboard Camp Johnson. The mess hall was awarded the “Full Food Service Mess Hall Award,” Oct. 21.

“The award is a high achievement over other mess halls,” said Kim Moore, a production manager at Mess Hall 455 and Southold, Long Island, New York, native. “It was a team effort from everyone. We couldn’t have done it without them.”

Not only was the mess hall presented the award, but each member of the staff received a certificate of appreciation for their contribution to the success of the mess hall.

“The mess hall and the members of the staff were presented with certificates for their work,” said Col. David Jones, Camp Johnson area commander and Kingston, Jamaica, native. “There’s a pride in the mess hall. Their passion for what they do is genuine and it shows.”

The passion the staff displays on a daily basis in food preparation, cleanliness of the mess hall, and in ensuring that each Marine and Sailor that enters the mess hall is greeted with a courteous smile is what makes this place special, said Jones.

The mess hall set itself apart from others by not only excelling in food quality and preparation, but also in many technical aspects denoted in inspections.

Mess Hall 455 won also the Hill award, distinguishing them from 55 other Marine Corps contractor mess halls, once in 2006 and 2009.

“We hope to go to the next competition and compete to be the best contractor mess hall in the Marine Corps,” said Mike Picano, general manager of Mess Hall 455. “We want to keep pushing to take care of Marines and sailors.”
