CAMP GUERNSEY, Wyo. - Explosions resonated from a demolition range on Camp Guernsey Joint Training Center as a small demo team trained to deny future enemy assets in case of battle.
The eight-man team from the 1041st Engineer Company, based in Rock Spring, Evanston and Afton, Wyoming, were tasked with detonating an increasingly complex combination of charges during annual training.
The company’s operation officer, 1st Lt. Benjamin Nemec said he’s been doing demolitions for 10 years and views the training at Camp Guernsey Joint Training Center’s demolition range as an opportunity to train the trainers as well as gain proficiency in their job set.
Prior to any field execution, the small team must pass a written exam prior to handling explosives. Once they get the green light, the soldiers can conduct any necessary demolition training that will prepare them for future operations.
Staff Sgt. Eric Dirkes, a senior boat operator from Laramie, said the engineers could use the explosives to build tank ditches, landing areas for aircraft or destroy bridges, utilities, railroad tracks and communications.
“If it’s of use to the enemy; we can make it useless,” Dirkes said.
