SAN ANTONIO - Five Army Medical Command (MEDCOM) sergeants major led the Formation of Troops representing 10 MEDCOM regions and Army medical corps during the change of responsibility ceremony held Oct. 24, 2014, at Joint-Base Fort Sam Houston, Texas, for outgoing Command Sgt. Maj. (CSM) Donna A. Brock.
The group spent the previous two days participating in the 2014 USAMEDCOM CSM Summit held Oct. 22-23 at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. The summit convenes regularly to discuss issues of importance to the enlisted medical corps. Army sergeants major represent the highest enlisted rank in the Army and report to their unit's command sergeant major (CSM) who is also the unit's senior enlisted member. The MEDCOM command sergeant major serves as a special advisor to the commanding officer, Lt. Gen. Patricia D. Horoho, Army surgeon general and commanding general U.S. Army Medical Command.
The command sergeant major cares for his/her unit's battle flag, and is the senior representative of the enlisted Soldiers and noncommissioned officers serving under him/her. Enlisted Soldiers who attain the distinction of being selected by the Department of the Army for participation in the command sergeants major program are the epitome of success in their chosen field, in this profession of arms. There is no higher grade of rank for enlisted Soldiers, except Sergeant Major of the Army and there is no greater honor. The position of Sergeant Major of the Army is currently held by Sgt. Maj. of the Army Raymond F. Chandler III.
